GlobalProtect VPN Client - Linux 6.1.5

Use the VPN client whenever you need to access UMD Internet resources or (if you use the UMD wireless network) when you want to encrypt your Internet communications.

Students, Faculty, and Staff of the University of Maryland College Park (UMD) only. This can be installed on machines that are owned by the individual or the university.

The University of Maryland provides access to its information technology (IT) systems in support of academic programming. Those who access our IT systems, however, remain responsible for their own conduct. UMD’s Policy on the Acceptable Use of IT Resources (X-1.00(A)) prohibits the use of content in violation of applicable Federal or State laws, and prohibits the knowing use of UMD IT resources for illegal activities. Please consult the local laws and regulations of the country in which you reside, and use UMD’s IT systems and resources in compliance with applicable local restrictions.

Instructions

Step 1: Download the Installer

  • RHEL: GlobalProtect_UI_rpm-6.1.5.0-863.rpm
  • Ubuntu: GlobalProtect_UI_deb-6.1.5.1-715.deb

Step 2: Enable Required Repositories and Dependencies

  • For RHEL 8.9:
    subscription-manager repos --enable rhel-8-for-x86_64-baseos-rpms
    subscription-manager repos --enable rhel-8-for-x86_64-appstream-rpms
    subscription-manager repos --enable codeready-builder-for-rhel-8-x86_64-rpms
    
    dnf install https://dl.fedoraproject.org/pub/epel/epel-release-latest-8.noarch.rpm
    dnf config-manager --set-enabled epel
    
  • For RHEL 9.3:
    subscription-manager repos --enable rhel-9-for-x86_64-baseos-rpms
    subscription-manager repos --enable rhel-9-for-x86_64-appstream-rpms
    subscription-manager repos --enable codeready-builder-for-rhel-9-x86_64-rpms
    
    dnf install https://dl.fedoraproject.org/pub/epel/epel-release-latest-9.noarch.rpm
    dnf config-manager --set-enabled epel
    
  • For Ubuntu 20.04 / 22.04:
    add-apt-repository main
    add-apt-repository universe
    add-apt-repository restricted
    add-apt-repository multiverse
    
    apt-get update
    apt-get install libqt5webkit5
    

Step 3: Install GlobalProtect

  • RHEL 8.9 / 9.3 (x86_64): dnf install GlobalProtect_UI_rpm-6.1.5.0-863.rpm
  • Ubuntu 20.04 / 22.04: dpkg -i GlobalProtect_UI_deb-6.1.5.1-715.deb

Step 4: Launch GlobalProtect After Installation

  • Launch GlobalProtect from your system menu or top panel.
  • When prompted for a portal address, enter: access.umd.edu
  • A browser window will open and redirect you to the CAS login page.
  • Log in with your credentials. Once authenticated, you will be connected to the UMD VPN.

Installation Notes

Supported Linux Versions (latest version supported):

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux: 8.9, 9.3
  • Ubuntu: 20.04, 22.04

International Students: If you're connecting from outside the United States, please choose "Tunnel All" in the GlobalProtect gateway options.

Important Repository Notice:
All repositories listed above must be enabled to resolve required dependencies for the GlobalProtect installation.

For RHEL systems, ensure that your host is registered with a valid entitlement to these repositories.
If you are attempting to register with a site subscription and cannot register your host to rhelops.umd.edu (the Division of IT's Red Hat Satellite instance), please contact the DIT Unix Services team at: request@umd.edu for further assistance.
